Identitas Mare Award

Gil Eannes Foundation

This emblematic ship started its activity as a hospital in 1955, supporting the Portuguese cod fleet that operated in the banks of Newfoundland and Greenland for decades. After being deactivated, it was to be dismantled; however, there was an extraordinary gesture by the citizens of Viana who, considering it cultural and affective heritage of the city, bought it, rehabilitated it and transformed it into an excellent museum, thus saving this symbol from the cod fishing odyssey. Since the management of this heritage was handed over to the Gil Eannes Foundation, more than one million people have visited this fantastic ship.
